HELPING YOUR CHILD BECOME A CONFIDENT READER
I help parents use simple, proven strategies to teach their child to read with confidence.

To learn to read is to light a fire; every syllable that is spelled out is a spark. —Victor Hugo
Hi, I’m Kim McOmber.
I earned my B.A. in Elementary Education from BYU and taught in the public school system before having my first child. After that, I began teaching preschool reading classes and tutoring children in reading.
I was incredibly fortunate to be trained by my mother-in-law, Rachel McOmber—the creator of the McOmber Readers, a powerful phonetic resource used to teach readers of all ages, and a preschool teacher with over 20 years of experience. That training was truly transformative for me.
She was a master educator with remarkable vision—someone who didn’t just teach reading, but inspired a love for it. She ignited a spark in me that has never faded: a desire to make a difference…one reader at a time.
It was an honor to be invited to contribute to her work by writing a few readers for the second edition revision—something I will always cherish.
In 1998, with our three young children, we began a great adventure—moving overseas with the State Department as part of the diplomatic corps. Over the next 24 years, we had the incredible privilege of living in eight different countries.
During that time, I homeschooled our six children, which opened the door to experiencing the rich geography, history, and cultures of each place we called home. Learning extended far beyond books—it became a way of life, shaped by the world around us.
Along the way, I not only taught my own children, but also continued tutoring others in reading, including ESL learners. I had the joy of coming alongside families from a variety of backgrounds, and I began training parents to confidently teach their own children to read.

It has been incredibly rewarding to see the fruit of teaching my own children—and so many others—to read with confidence. All of our children have gone on to college. Five have already graduated (with our youngest currently pursuing her degree), and three have continued on to earn advanced degrees. They’ve grown into amazing people—thoughtful, capable, well-read, and contributing members of society.
But as meaningful as that is, something even more priceless was brought to my attention recently.
While I was sharing about my work, one of my sons began reminiscing about the time we spent learning to read together. He said:
“Reading with you was more than just instruction—it was time set aside just for us. Even if it was only 20–30 minutes, I always had your full attention. Those moments supported my growth, met an emotional need, and built a lifelong bond between us.”
That is what I want for you.
Yes, I want you to raise confident, capable readers—children who grow into adults with opportunities open wide before them. But even more than that, I want you to experience that connection…that bond.
Because during that brief, daily time together—those 20 or 30 minutes—your child isn’t just learning to read. They’re experiencing what it feels like to be seen, valued, and deeply supported. In those moments, their growth, their confidence, and their heart become your full focus.
And that kind of investment lasts a lifetime.
